For my first official post, I wanted to highlight this great nonprofit organization that has dedicated itself to saving animals. Founded in 2002 this group has grown and gained recognition for all the great work they have accomplished. I spoke with one of the volunteers, Marcy Gonzalez and asked her how the program has helped the community. She explained to me that, “We’ve partner with multiple community programs that are nonprofit to help shelter animals and provide services at low or no cost. One of the partners that we feature is a group So Fresh ‘N’ So Clean. Groomers donate their time to service numerous pets. We also offer medical vouchers so that animals can get proper care”. This is an amazing gift to those animals. A proper grooming always helps improve the chances of adoption. Offering medical benefits helps immensely. Elderly dogs can get medication, puppies can get spayed and neutered, even disabled or injured receive care.

Look at what a difference! Such a cutie!
Look at that transformation! Such a cutie!

Another partnership I learned about was Read 2 Paws. It is a reading program for children who can go into shelters and read to the animals. This is an amazing opportunity to teach kids about the care and empathy necessary for pets. It also gives the animals something to look forward to and a nice change of pace.

There is an upcoming event Feb 16, 2020

In addition, I want to mention the DTLA Art Walk. This is an event that I would recommend to anyone who can go. It is the second Thursday of every month. Not only are there amazing exhibits to visit but also incredible food! While walking through DTLA you will see puppies and volunteers of the Watts Project. This is one of the many events they attend in hopes of getting more animals adopted. “Our main goal is to foster and find permanent homes to our beloved four legged friends”, says Gonzalez. “Adoption process is thorough and animals are spayed or neutered. We even chip the animals so that owners can register pets so that if lost they can be found and returned home” If you are looking to add a new member to the family please consider adoption and save a life. Thank you!

What We Care About

I want to explain to you all who I am and what made me decide to create this blog.

My name is Vanessa O’Brien. I am a student, employee, and pet owner. I decided to start this blog in hopes of connecting others with animals. This partnership is so rewarding and offers a new sense of purpose.  I adopted my dog Rocky three years ago through the Watts Project and fell in love. They said he was found in the garbage can by an alley when they rescued him. I couldn’t imagine why somebody would do that to a helpless puppy. My heartbreaks every time I see animals abandoned or lost, I just want to help anyway I can. I know it can be expensive to care for animals but there are services made available that can help supplement costs. Since Rocky has been home we go on adventures all the time. We like to go to the beach and park. Sometimes even participating in fun agility classes can help socialize animals and offer them that necessary exercise. I plan to share more about pet friendly events and easy ways to care for animals. Letting everyone know when and where adoption fairs are taking place. If you have suggestions or questions please feel free to reach out and contact me personally.
